Siyaphila – Access to Water Programme

Access to clean and reliable water remains a critical challenge in rural communities like Babanango, where many households rely on distant or inconsistent sources. This not only affects daily living conditions but also limits agricultural productivity, hygiene, and overall community health. Babanango Foundation is working alongside local partners to improve water access through sustainable solutions such as solar powered borehole development, and conservation education aimed at protecting natural water sources.

The Challenge

Access to clean water is a fundamental human right, yet many rural communities in South Africa, including those in Babanango, face persistent water shortages due to aging infrastructure, drought, and limited government support.

These challenges impact health, education, food security, and overall quality of life. Through our Access to Water Programme, Babanango Foundation is working to provide green reliable and sustainable water sources—such as solar powered boreholes and spring protection—for underserved communities in Babanango.

Our approach

  • Solar Powered BoreholesWe have installed and converted 17 boreholes equipped with solar-powered pumps to provide access to clean drinking water.
  • Water Conservation EducationTraining communities on efficient water use and sustainable resource management.

Key achievements:

  • Over 5 000 people benefit from improved water access
  • Reduced reliance on distant, unsafe water sources
