Siyafunda – Education & Youth Development

Within a 10km radius of Babanango Game Reserve, there are 36 primary and high schools, along with 22 Early Childhood Development (ECD) centres—many of which face significant resource constraints. Babanango Foundation’s community initiatives focus on strengthening these institutions by supporting infrastructure development, providing teacher training, and hosting engaging kids' conservation camps. Recognizing that the first 1,000 days of a child’s life are critical for long-term development, our programmes also prioritise early learning and nutrition to ensure every child has the best possible start.

The Challenge

Education and youth development are critical for the long-term sustainability of rural communities.

However, several challenges hinder access to quality education and limit opportunities for young people.

Addressing these issues requires targeted interventions to equip youth with knowledge, skills, and resources for a better future.

Our approach

  • Support22 ECD Centres supported since 2022, supporting over 500 children a year
  • TrainingEducator capacity building and mentorship
  • Wi-Fi Wi-Fi access for schools in close proximity to BGR
  • OutreachSchool outreach programmes on conservation and sustainability
  • CampsTwo-day conservation education camp
  • MaterialProvision of educational materials
  • SportsSupport for youth sports development, particularly soccer and netball

Key achievements:

  • Resourcing of 36 ECD centres
  • Training and mentorship for 50 ECD practitioners
  • School visits to the Babanango Outdoor Education Centre
  • Wifi access for 2 schools
