Siyakhula – Community & Enterprise Development

Community gardens offer more than just food—they serve as vital gathering spaces and sources of income for local community members who cultivate and sell surplus produce. In a community largely made up of elderly residents and school-going children, these gardens help strengthen food security, foster social connection, and support household livelihoods.

The Challenge

Rural communities often face persistent challenges, including limited access to clean water, inadequate educational infrastructure, and widespread economic hardship. In the Babanango region of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, these issues are particularly acute.

The African Habitat Conservation Foundation is working to address these needs through community-driven initiatives—supporting food security via community gardens, promoting environmental education in local schools, and creating income-generating opportunities through conservation-linked programmes.

By investing in people and nature, Babanango Foundation is helping to build a more resilient and empowered Babanango.
